Read the open structure
Before choosing an ending, identify what the beginning still needs: an object, infinitive, -ing phrase, relative clause, result clause or comparison. Read the entire joined sentence, not only the two touching words. Tense and subject agreement can eliminate otherwise plausible endings.
Common linking frameworks
Check the whole pattern and the type of clause it accepts. A comparison needs compatible items; a relative word must have a suitable antecedent. If/unless endings must match the intended real or hypothetical condition, not merely contain a familiar tense.
| Beginning pattern | Expected continuation |
|---|---|
| so + adjective | that + clause |
| such + noun phrase | that + clause |
| too + adjective | to + V1 |
| adjective + enough | to + V1 |
| not only… | but also… |
| either… / neither… | or… / nor… |
| as + adjective/adverb | as… |
| would rather | V1… |
Reference and logical relation
Check who he/she/they/it refers to and whether this/that refers to a sensible earlier idea. Because supplies a reason, although a contrast, so a result, and so that often a purpose. The ending must continue the intended meaning, not just be grammatical by itself. Watch negatives, amounts and chronology.
Working method
- Read every beginning and ending.
- Match strong structural clues first.
- Check each completed sentence for grammar and meaning.
- Use elimination only after positive evidence.
- Recheck all matches together and follow the reuse rule.
Worked example
The structure is so + adjective + that-clause expressing a result. “To land” would need a different beginning such as too strong; we cannot rewrite the given beginning to rescue a match.
Beginning: The wind was so strong
Ending: that the ferry could not leave the harbor.
Complete: The wind was so strong that the ferry could not leave the harbor.
Final checklist
- Does the ending complete the required structure?
- Do pronouns, tense and number agree?
- Is the logical relation correct?
- Did I keep every given word unchanged?
- Are all matches valid together?
