How to solve: GrammarGrammar and usage: one sentence, one correct option.

What it tests

The same skills as “Choose the answer”, with more focus on structures: relative clauses, conditionals, linking words, verb patterns, agreement.

In the exam: part V, 7 tasks.

Step by step

  1. Find the gap's role in the sentence (which clause it belongs to).
  2. Compare the options: are they linking words, verb forms, pronouns?
  3. Check both sides of the gap: what the word must connect to.
  4. Use signal words: if, unless, wish, although, despite, so that.
  5. Read the completed sentence for sense.

Watch out for

  • despite / although: despite + noun or -ing, although + clause.
  • who / which / that / whose / what — what never follows a noun.
  • Conditionals: no will after if in the if-clause.

Example

Most folk songs are ballads ____ have simple words and tell simple stories. a) what b) that c) when d) although

b) that — it begins a relative clause describing “ballads” and is the subject of “have”.
