What it tests
Reported speech and rephrasing: tense backshift, pronouns, time and place words, word order in reported questions, reporting verbs.
In the exam: part VI, 5 tasks. A task scores only when all your choices are right.
Step by step
- For each pair compare meaning first: does the second sentence say the same thing?
- Check the tense shift: will → would, am → was, did → had done.
- Check pronouns and time words: I → he, tomorrow → the next day, now → then, here → there.
- Reported questions use statement word order and no do/did: asked where I lived.
- Check the reporting verb pattern: told me to…, asked if…, warned not to….
Watch out for
- Keeping question word order in reported speech: asked where did I live ✕.
- Forgetting to change tomorrow, today, here.
- said to me vs told me; asked if with an extra what.
Example
“Do you want to buy any newspapers?” said Jack. → Jack asks if I wanted to buy any newspapers.
Wrong — the reporting verb must be past (asked), matching wanted.
