What it tests
Noticing words that break the grammar: a doubled auxiliary, an extra preposition or article, a redundant pronoun.
In the exam: part X, 5 tasks. A task scores only when all your choices are right.
Step by step
- Read each sentence slowly, word by word.
- Try removing small words (to, at, of, the, it, been) — does the sentence become correct?
- Check verb patterns: go on annoying (no at), needs repairing (no being).
- Check repeated meaning: at the age of ten (not ten years).
- If a sentence is fully correct, do not select it.
Watch out for
- Unusual but correct sentences — don't mark them just because they feel strange.
- Extra word hidden in a fixed phrase: discuss about ✕, enter into the room ✕.
- Double subjects: My brother he lives… ✕.
Example
You will regret it if you go on at annoying people like that.
Contains an extra word: “at” — go on + -ing needs no preposition.
