How to solve: Passive voiceChoose every correct passive-voice sentence.

What it tests

Passive forms in all tenses and with modals: be + past participle, agent with by.

In the exam: part XI, 5 tasks. A task scores only when all your choices are right.

Step by step

  1. Decide whether the sentence should be passive: does the subject receive the action?
  2. Check be in the right tense: is made, was made, has been made, will be made, is being made.
  3. Check the past participle (V3): built, written, sent.
  4. Modal passive: modal + be + V3: can be borrowed.
  5. Active sentences in the list are not passive — don't select them unless the task asks for correct sentences of any kind.

Watch out for

  • Missing been: The hall hasn't decorated ✕ → hasn't been decorated.
  • -ing instead of V3: are still making by… ✕ → are still being made.
  • Wrong agreement: The letters was sent ✕.

Example

Preparations are still making by the picnickers.

Wrong — the passive continuous is are still being made.
