How to solve: PrepositionsA text with gaps and a bank of prepositions and adverbs.

What it tests

Prepositions in fixed phrases (by profession, face to face), after verbs and adjectives, and in time and place expressions.

In the exam: part IX, 1 tasks.

Step by step

  1. Read the phrase around the gap, not just the word before it.
  2. Think of the whole expression: in the habit of, by chance, at least.
  3. Check verb + preposition pairs: depend on, consist of, interested in.
  4. Time: in (months, years), on (days, dates), at (clock times); place: in/on/at.
  5. Use each bank word once; one is extra.

Watch out for

  • Translating the preposition from your own language.
  • till vs by: till = up to that moment, by = no later than.
  • along / across / through — direction matters.

Example

As Monsieur, watchmaker ____ profession, was strolling ____ the boulevard…

by profession (fixed phrase), strolling along the boulevard (movement following a street).

EXERCISE TEXT

Baby lions are as gentle as baby cats. Like cats, lions like to sleep 1 the daytime and wander at night. A lion hunts the way a cat hunts 2 a bird. It will lie waiting until its prey is near. Then it will spring. A lion can kill 3 one blow 4 breaking the neck of its prey.

Although baby lions are as friendly as kittens, big lions are not friendly at all. Sometimes a circus lion will kill the man who has trained it. The lion is one of the strongest of wild animals. But it isn't the fiercest. The lion's large head and long mane make it look proud and kingly. This is why it is called the “king 5 the beasts.'
