What this section tests
Read the text and all bank entries before answering. Classify candidates as nouns, verbs, adjectives or adverbs, noting words with more than one role. Check the actual instruction and the number of gaps and entries; do not assume exactly one unused word.
Structural fit
A candidate must match the required part of speech, number, tense and complementation. A plural subject may need a different verb form from a singular one. A/an + adjective can still require a later noun. Do not silently change the bank word’s form unless the instruction allows it.
Collocations and meaning
Learn expressions as units: make a decision, do research, pay attention, heavy traffic, take responsibility. A synonym may not share the same collocation. Check whether the context needs cause, consequence, contrast, a positive evaluation or a negative one. Pronouns and repeated ideas connect later sentences to earlier ones.
Solve the bank as a system
Fill certain gaps first and reserve ambiguous ones. If the task uses each entry once, track used entries. An attractive early guess can block the only possible word for a later gap. Re-check unused words at the end, but never force one into a grammatically wrong position.
Worked example
Gave requires a direct object here; explanation is a noun, and clear modifies it. Explain is a verb, clearly an adverb, explanatory an adjective. Only explanation completes this noun phrase.
The guide gave a clear explanation of the route.
Bank: explain / explanation / clearly / explanatory.
Final checklist
- Does every filled sentence make sense?
- Is the form exactly the one supplied?
- Are collocations and prepositions right?
- Have I followed the task’s reuse rule and checked every unused entry?
