How to solve: PrepositionsA text with gaps and a bank of prepositions and adverbs.

What it tests

Prepositions in fixed phrases (by profession, face to face), after verbs and adjectives, and in time and place expressions.

In the exam: part IX, 1 tasks.

Step by step

  1. Read the phrase around the gap, not just the word before it.
  2. Think of the whole expression: in the habit of, by chance, at least.
  3. Check verb + preposition pairs: depend on, consist of, interested in.
  4. Time: in (months, years), on (days, dates), at (clock times); place: in/on/at.
  5. Use each bank word once; one is extra.

Watch out for

  • Translating the preposition from your own language.
  • till vs by: till = up to that moment, by = no later than.
  • along / across / through — direction matters.

Example

As Monsieur, watchmaker ____ profession, was strolling ____ the boulevard…

by profession (fixed phrase), strolling along the boulevard (movement following a street).

EXERCISE TEXT

I went to the window and looked out. A fog had come up 1 the sea. I could not see the woods. It was very hot, but the sun was hidden 2 the wall of fog. I could hear the sea and I could smell it in the fog. I walked out of the house and onto the lawn. I looked 3 at the house. One of the shutters in the west wing had been pulled back. Someone was standing there, looking 4 me. For a moment I thought that it was Maxim. Then the figure moved and I saw that it was Mrs Danvers.

I felt that she knew 5 my tears. She had planned all this to happen. This was her triumph — hers and Rebecca's.
