What it tests
Prepositions in fixed phrases (by profession, face to face), after verbs and adjectives, and in time and place expressions.
In the exam: part IX, 1 tasks.
Step by step
- Read the phrase around the gap, not just the word before it.
- Think of the whole expression: in the habit of, by chance, at least.
- Check verb + preposition pairs: depend on, consist of, interested in.
- Time: in (months, years), on (days, dates), at (clock times); place: in/on/at.
- Use each bank word once; one is extra.
Watch out for
- Translating the preposition from your own language.
- till vs by: till = up to that moment, by = no later than.
- along / across / through — direction matters.
Example
As Monsieur, watchmaker ____ profession, was strolling ____ the boulevard…
by profession (fixed phrase), strolling along the boulevard (movement following a street).
