How to solve: PrepositionsA text with gaps and a bank of prepositions and adverbs.

What it tests

Prepositions in fixed phrases (by profession, face to face), after verbs and adjectives, and in time and place expressions.

In the exam: part IX, 1 tasks.

Step by step

  1. Read the phrase around the gap, not just the word before it.
  2. Think of the whole expression: in the habit of, by chance, at least.
  3. Check verb + preposition pairs: depend on, consist of, interested in.
  4. Time: in (months, years), on (days, dates), at (clock times); place: in/on/at.
  5. Use each bank word once; one is extra.

Watch out for

  • Translating the preposition from your own language.
  • till vs by: till = up to that moment, by = no later than.
  • along / across / through — direction matters.

Example

As Monsieur, watchmaker ____ profession, was strolling ____ the boulevard…

by profession (fixed phrase), strolling along the boulevard (movement following a street).

EXERCISE TEXT

The similarity of Mars 1 Earth has caused much debate on whether life exists or has existed on the planet. However, none of the exploration missions have provided any biological proof. 2 its likeness Mars is a cold, dry, desert-like planet with a thin atmosphere. There is no liquid water, which is an essential ingredient 3 life. There is little atmospheric protection 4 solar or cosmic radiation. The temperatures are so low that only Antarctica on Earth is comparable, although Mars is much colder. The thin atmosphere consists 5 around 95% carbon dioxide. No known species could survive the harsh Martian surface conditions. Scientific evidence suggests that the planet was once more habitable than it is today, but whether life has ever existed there remains a mystery.
