How to solve: Words in contextA text with gaps and a word bank; each word is used once and one word is extra.

What it tests

Vocabulary in context: meaning, word class and collocation (which words go together).

In the exam: part VII, 1 tasks.

Step by step

  1. Read the whole text first without filling anything.
  2. Mark the word class of each bank word: noun, verb, adjective, adverb.
  3. For each gap decide which word class fits, then choose by meaning.
  4. Fill the gaps you are sure about first; the remaining choices get easier.
  5. One word is left over — check it really fits nowhere.

Watch out for

  • A word with the right meaning but the wrong form (rely vs reliable).
  • Collocations: pay attention, make a decision, facial expression.
  • Using the same word twice.

Example

Facial ____ and tone of voice show our feelings. Bank: rely, expression, pay, reaction…

expression — “facial expression” is a fixed collocation and a noun is needed after the adjective.

EXERCISE TEXT

The ideal breakfast, say scientists, is a glass of orange juice, a cup of coffee and a bowl of cereal. People who start the day with a drink of vitamin C, a dose of caffeine and their favorite cereal are happier and perform better 1 the morning. Andy Smith, Professor at the University of Bristol, said, “A study of 600 people who were asked to record their breakfast habits found that those who regularly ate cereal in the morning had a more positive mood compared with those who ate other foods or had no breakfast. Earlier research had shown that people whose 2 performance was measured 3 after eating breakfast of any kind performed 10 percent better on test of remembering, speed of response and 4 to concentrate, as compared with those given only a cup of decaffeinated coffee.”

In further research, Professor Smith said that people who drank four cups of coffee a day performed more 5 all day than those who drank less. He suggested that sensible employers should give out free coffee or tea.
