How to solve: Words in contextA text with gaps and a word bank; each word is used once and one word is extra.

What it tests

Vocabulary in context: meaning, word class and collocation (which words go together).

In the exam: part VII, 1 tasks.

Step by step

  1. Read the whole text first without filling anything.
  2. Mark the word class of each bank word: noun, verb, adjective, adverb.
  3. For each gap decide which word class fits, then choose by meaning.
  4. Fill the gaps you are sure about first; the remaining choices get easier.
  5. One word is left over — check it really fits nowhere.

Watch out for

  • A word with the right meaning but the wrong form (rely vs reliable).
  • Collocations: pay attention, make a decision, facial expression.
  • Using the same word twice.

Example

Facial ____ and tone of voice show our feelings. Bank: rely, expression, pay, reaction…

expression — “facial expression” is a fixed collocation and a noun is needed after the adjective.

Part B · Text 8
EXERCISE TEXT

I was born in Switzerland, in the town of Geneva. My parents loved each other very much. 1. I learnt that to love and to be patient are the most important things in the world.

My mother hoped to have a daughter after I was born. 2. And then my mother found a sister for me. She was helping a family in which there were five children. 3. One of the children was a little girl, with golden hair and blue eyes. Her name was Elizabeth. 4. So Elizabeth became the daughter that my mother had always wanted. As I grew older, my love for Elizabeth became stronger all the time. We loved her as much as she loved us.

The years passed happily, and we had everything that we needed. 5. His name was Henry Clerval, and he was very clever. My family also liked him very much, so he was a welcome visitor to our house.
