How to solve: Words in contextA text with gaps and a word bank; each word is used once and one word is extra.

What it tests

Vocabulary in context: meaning, word class and collocation (which words go together).

In the exam: part VII, 1 tasks.

Step by step

  1. Read the whole text first without filling anything.
  2. Mark the word class of each bank word: noun, verb, adjective, adverb.
  3. For each gap decide which word class fits, then choose by meaning.
  4. Fill the gaps you are sure about first; the remaining choices get easier.
  5. One word is left over — check it really fits nowhere.

Watch out for

  • A word with the right meaning but the wrong form (rely vs reliable).
  • Collocations: pay attention, make a decision, facial expression.
  • Using the same word twice.

Example

Facial ____ and tone of voice show our feelings. Bank: rely, expression, pay, reaction…

expression — “facial expression” is a fixed collocation and a noun is needed after the adjective.

EXERCISE TEXT

One evening I was driving home along a quiet dark street in a suburb of London. A man stopped me and asked for a lift.1.

As I drove I suddenly remembered all the headlines I had recently seen in the popular newspapers, describing the activities of thieves and murderers. I began to feel suspicious of the man sitting next to me. 2. Sure enough, the watch had disappeared! So the newspapers were right after all.

3. It was not loaded, but that did not matter. Stopping the car I quickly took out the pistol. Pushing the pistol into the man's ribs I ordered him to give me the watch.

It was amusing to see the man's reaction. He was a very strange robber! 4. “Now, get out, quick!” I ordered. He rushed out of the car and ran like a rabbit. 5. Half an hour later I was undressing to go to bed and suddenly I looked at my dressing table. What do you think I saw there? My watch which I had forgotten to take!
