How to solve: Words in contextA text with gaps and a word bank; each word is used once and one word is extra.

What it tests

Vocabulary in context: meaning, word class and collocation (which words go together).

In the exam: part VII, 1 tasks.

Step by step

  1. Read the whole text first without filling anything.
  2. Mark the word class of each bank word: noun, verb, adjective, adverb.
  3. For each gap decide which word class fits, then choose by meaning.
  4. Fill the gaps you are sure about first; the remaining choices get easier.
  5. One word is left over — check it really fits nowhere.

Watch out for

  • A word with the right meaning but the wrong form (rely vs reliable).
  • Collocations: pay attention, make a decision, facial expression.
  • Using the same word twice.

Example

Facial ____ and tone of voice show our feelings. Bank: rely, expression, pay, reaction…

expression — “facial expression” is a fixed collocation and a noun is needed after the adjective.

EXERCISE TEXT

If you do not use your arms or legs for some time, they become weak. 1. Everybody knows this, and nobody would think of questioning this fact.

Yet there are many people who do not seem to know much about memory. 2. When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by exercising it regularly.

When someone else says that his memory is poor, it is actually his fault. 3. The position is exactly the same as that of two people, one of whom exercises his arms and legs by playing tennis, while the other sits in a chair or a motor-car all day. 4. But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents are to blame, or that he is just unlucky. Few of us realize that it is just his own fault.

5. But all of us can, if we have ordinary bodies and brains, improve our strength and our memory by the same means — practice.

FILL IN USING THE WORD BANK

Choose the best word for each gap

1 So one should use them as little as possible.2 When you start using them again, they slowly become strong.3 The reason is that he doesn't give it enough opportunity to become strong.4 Not all of us can become extremely strong or extremely clever.5 He may be accused of deliberately forgetting important things.6 If a friend complains that his arms are weak, we know that it is his own fault.7 The thing is that memory works in the same way.
