How to solve: Words in contextA text with gaps and a word bank; each word is used once and one word is extra.

What it tests

Vocabulary in context: meaning, word class and collocation (which words go together).

In the exam: part VII, 1 tasks.

Step by step

  1. Read the whole text first without filling anything.
  2. Mark the word class of each bank word: noun, verb, adjective, adverb.
  3. For each gap decide which word class fits, then choose by meaning.
  4. Fill the gaps you are sure about first; the remaining choices get easier.
  5. One word is left over — check it really fits nowhere.

Watch out for

  • A word with the right meaning but the wrong form (rely vs reliable).
  • Collocations: pay attention, make a decision, facial expression.
  • Using the same word twice.

Example

Facial ____ and tone of voice show our feelings. Bank: rely, expression, pay, reaction…

expression — “facial expression” is a fixed collocation and a noun is needed after the adjective.

EXERCISE TEXT

I am a writer and my latest books are about ghosts. To get all the information I need for my books I travel around the country. 1. I've been to several haunted houses and you can scarcely imagine the experiences I've had, many of them quite frightening.

A few months ago I was staying with friends near Land's End. 2. One evening someone mentioned The Smuggler's Arms, an inn outside the village. “The inn's nearly 400 years old and they say it has a ghost. I've never seen it, of course, but you can ask the man who owns the place. His name is Tregeagle. He won't mind you asking him questions.”

The next day I went out to the inn. Tregeagle could hardly tell me anything about the history of the place. 3. I had a few drinks with him in the bar and at a quarter to eleven we went upstairs to wait. Soon we heard footsteps in the room above us. It sounded like the footsteps of several men walking around. 4. There was nobody in the room.

The next morning I went to the local library to look for some books on the history of the area. 5. It turned out that the inn was once a place where smugglers met. The owner was a smuggler and died there in the 18th century. Many years ago people found a secret room in the roof where the smugglers used to hide.
