How to solve: Words in contextA text with gaps and a word bank; each word is used once and one word is extra.

What it tests

Vocabulary in context: meaning, word class and collocation (which words go together).

In the exam: part VII, 1 tasks.

Step by step

  1. Read the whole text first without filling anything.
  2. Mark the word class of each bank word: noun, verb, adjective, adverb.
  3. For each gap decide which word class fits, then choose by meaning.
  4. Fill the gaps you are sure about first; the remaining choices get easier.
  5. One word is left over — check it really fits nowhere.

Watch out for

  • A word with the right meaning but the wrong form (rely vs reliable).
  • Collocations: pay attention, make a decision, facial expression.
  • Using the same word twice.

Example

Facial ____ and tone of voice show our feelings. Bank: rely, expression, pay, reaction…

expression — “facial expression” is a fixed collocation and a noun is needed after the adjective.

EXERCISE TEXT

When June Booker bought a new frying pan at 30% off in the sales, she thought she had got a real bargain. 1. First, she dropped the pan on her foot on the way home and was taken to hospital. “I had lots of shopping because I hadn't planned to buy a frying pan. 2. I just couldn't carry it all,” said June. At the hospital her foot was bandaged and she was sent home in a taxi.

3. “I'd just put some oil in it and started to heat it up when the phone rang. I only left the kitchen for a couple of minutes but when I came back there were flames coming out of it,” said June. So she picked up a bowl of water and threw it onto the pan. “I know it was a stupid thing to do, but I panicked,” said June, “and the flames got bigger.” .

4. They arrived and dealt with the fire in minutes. Although she will need a new kitchen, the rest of June Booker's flat was only slightly damaged by smoke. 5. “The doctors were rather surprised to see me back again so soon,” she said.
