How to solve: Words in contextA text with gaps and a word bank; each word is used once and one word is extra.

What it tests

Vocabulary in context: meaning, word class and collocation (which words go together).

In the exam: part VII, 1 tasks.

Step by step

  1. Read the whole text first without filling anything.
  2. Mark the word class of each bank word: noun, verb, adjective, adverb.
  3. For each gap decide which word class fits, then choose by meaning.
  4. Fill the gaps you are sure about first; the remaining choices get easier.
  5. One word is left over — check it really fits nowhere.

Watch out for

  • A word with the right meaning but the wrong form (rely vs reliable).
  • Collocations: pay attention, make a decision, facial expression.
  • Using the same word twice.

Example

Facial ____ and tone of voice show our feelings. Bank: rely, expression, pay, reaction…

expression — “facial expression” is a fixed collocation and a noun is needed after the adjective.

EXERCISE TEXT

After reading an article entitled “Cigarette Smoking and Your Health” I lit a cigarette to calm my nerves. I smoked with concentration and pleasure. 1. For a whole week I did not smoke at all. During this time I suffered terribly but my wife suffered even more. 2. My bad temper and my enormous appetite were sometimes unbearable even for me. My friends kept on offering me cigarettes and cigars. 3. This picture would amuse everybody and they would even make no effort to hide their smiles or laughter. After seven days of this I went to a party. I felt extremely uncomfortable with my packet of sweets. 4. So when my old friend Brian urged me to accept a cigarette, it was more than I could bear. 5. My wife was delighted that the things had returned to normal once more. As Brian pointed out, it is the easiest thing in the world to give up smoking. He himself has done it lots of times.

Choose the best word for each gap

1 To tell the truth I had all the usual symptoms of someone giving up smoking.2 I refused to take it and went on eating my sweets.3 I was sure this would be my last cigarette.4 In return to this I would produce a packet of sweets which I ate rather unhappily.5 My wife has always been against my smoking.6 I took one guiltily, lit it and smoked with satisfaction.7 Everybody around me was smoking and gazing at my packet.
