How to solve: Words in contextA text with gaps and a word bank; each word is used once and one word is extra.

What it tests

Vocabulary in context: meaning, word class and collocation (which words go together).

In the exam: part VII, 1 tasks.

Step by step

  1. Read the whole text first without filling anything.
  2. Mark the word class of each bank word: noun, verb, adjective, adverb.
  3. For each gap decide which word class fits, then choose by meaning.
  4. Fill the gaps you are sure about first; the remaining choices get easier.
  5. One word is left over — check it really fits nowhere.

Watch out for

  • A word with the right meaning but the wrong form (rely vs reliable).
  • Collocations: pay attention, make a decision, facial expression.
  • Using the same word twice.

Example

Facial ____ and tone of voice show our feelings. Bank: rely, expression, pay, reaction…

expression — “facial expression” is a fixed collocation and a noun is needed after the adjective.

Once a year a race is held for old cars. Last year a lot of cars entered for this race. 1. And the most moving thing about it was the fact that most cars were very unusual. The most unusual car was a Benz which had only three wheels and was the oldest car taking part.

After a great many loud explosions, the race began. Most cars broke down on the course. 2. A few cars, however, completed the race. 3. The winning car reached a speed of forty miles an hour. It seems funny to boast on such a speed. 4. It sped downhill at the end of the race and its driver had a lot of trouble trying to stop it. The race gave everybody great pleasure. 5.

1 So there was a great deal of excitement just before it began.2 Yet, it was much faster than any of its rivals.3 Some drivers spent more time under the cars than in them.4 Unfortunately, the race was cancelled.5 Everybody was delighted to see that the most handsome car — a Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost was among them.6 In spite of the efforts the drivers made no cars were able to come to the finish.7 It was very different from modern car races but no less exciting.
