How to solve: Words in contextA text with gaps and a word bank; each word is used once and one word is extra.

What it tests

Vocabulary in context: meaning, word class and collocation (which words go together).

In the exam: part VII, 1 tasks.

Step by step

  1. Read the whole text first without filling anything.
  2. Mark the word class of each bank word: noun, verb, adjective, adverb.
  3. For each gap decide which word class fits, then choose by meaning.
  4. Fill the gaps you are sure about first; the remaining choices get easier.
  5. One word is left over — check it really fits nowhere.

Watch out for

  • A word with the right meaning but the wrong form (rely vs reliable).
  • Collocations: pay attention, make a decision, facial expression.
  • Using the same word twice.

Example

Facial ____ and tone of voice show our feelings. Bank: rely, expression, pay, reaction…

expression — “facial expression” is a fixed collocation and a noun is needed after the adjective.

EXERCISE TEXT

I decided to visit a fortune-teller called Madam Brown. Her colorful tent was in a village fair. 1. She looked very strange, and there was a smell of unusual herbs. I gave her the money she asked for. m

2. “A relation of yours is coming to see you. She will be arriving this evening. 3. You will be happy to hear that as you haven't seen her for so long. The moment you leave this tent you will get a big surprise. A woman you know well will rush towards you. 4. That is all.”

As soon as I went outside I forgot all about the fortune-teller as my wife rushed towards me. “Where have you been hiding?” she asked impatiently. “5. She is going to spend the weekend with us.” As she walked away I followed her out of the fair.
