How to solve: Words in contextA text with gaps and a word bank; each word is used once and one word is extra.

What it tests

Vocabulary in context: meaning, word class and collocation (which words go together).

In the exam: part VII, 1 tasks.

Step by step

  1. Read the whole text first without filling anything.
  2. Mark the word class of each bank word: noun, verb, adjective, adverb.
  3. For each gap decide which word class fits, then choose by meaning.
  4. Fill the gaps you are sure about first; the remaining choices get easier.
  5. One word is left over — check it really fits nowhere.

Watch out for

  • A word with the right meaning but the wrong form (rely vs reliable).
  • Collocations: pay attention, make a decision, facial expression.
  • Using the same word twice.

Example

Facial ____ and tone of voice show our feelings. Bank: rely, expression, pay, reaction…

expression — “facial expression” is a fixed collocation and a noun is needed after the adjective.

EXERCISE TEXT

When I was almost fifteen I joined a travelling theatre troupe and started going on trips around America. It was on one of these tours that I was offered a 1 in a film, which I accepted. As a result, I went to Hollywood, where I eventually became a director as well as an actor. m

When I was a child, I could never have predicted my future fame and fortune. My 2 life was a time of great hardship, although my family had started off living quite comfortably. We had even had a maid to help out in the house. Our financial situation, however, gradually got 3 and in the end we lost everything. The family became so poor that at one stage my brothers and I had to take it in turns to 4 the only pair of shoes we had. Years later, a lot of these childhood experiences found their way into my films. I loved being the centre of 5 in films, something which I had never been as a boy.
