How to solve: Words in contextA text with gaps and a word bank; each word is used once and one word is extra.

What it tests

Vocabulary in context: meaning, word class and collocation (which words go together).

In the exam: part VII, 1 tasks.

Step by step

  1. Read the whole text first without filling anything.
  2. Mark the word class of each bank word: noun, verb, adjective, adverb.
  3. For each gap decide which word class fits, then choose by meaning.
  4. Fill the gaps you are sure about first; the remaining choices get easier.
  5. One word is left over — check it really fits nowhere.

Watch out for

  • A word with the right meaning but the wrong form (rely vs reliable).
  • Collocations: pay attention, make a decision, facial expression.
  • Using the same word twice.

Example

EXERCISE TEXT

Almost every nation is famous for a particular characteristic feature. People say that Irish people talk a lot. They say that the Welsh are great singers. The Scots, they say, are not a very happy or fun-loving nation, and they are also very careful with money. 1. But it is true that there are some very good Welsh actors and singers like Anthony Hopkins, Catherine Zeta Jones and Tom Jones.

Foreigners have some ideas about the things that are considered to be “British'. 2. The great British breakfast and afternoon tea, for example, are mostly found in hotels and “bed and breakfast' places for tourists. And the British do not only drink tea these days. 3. They drink, on average, 3.39 cups of tea each day and 1.65 cups of coffee.

4. Most of them are not very interested in clothes. Many British people wear suits to the office during the week, but at weekends they prefer to wear jeans.

It takes time to know a British person well. 5. And they are not good at learning foreign languages. Perhaps all this is because they live on an island!

FILL IN USING THE WORD BANK

Choose the best word for each gap

1 British people spend less money on clothes than the people in other European countries.2 Coffee is popular too.3 They admire the British for their conservatism and reserve.4 They are generally quite shy, and they do not make friends easily with strangers.5 It's quite easy to make friends with a British person.6 These descriptions are not always true.7 But some of these things are not part of ordinary people's everyday life.
