How to solve: Words in contextA text with gaps and a word bank; each word is used once and one word is extra.

What it tests

Vocabulary in context: meaning, word class and collocation (which words go together).

In the exam: part VII, 1 tasks.

Step by step

  1. Read the whole text first without filling anything.
  2. Mark the word class of each bank word: noun, verb, adjective, adverb.
  3. For each gap decide which word class fits, then choose by meaning.
  4. Fill the gaps you are sure about first; the remaining choices get easier.
  5. One word is left over — check it really fits nowhere.

Watch out for

  • A word with the right meaning but the wrong form (rely vs reliable).
  • Collocations: pay attention, make a decision, facial expression.
  • Using the same word twice.

Example

Facial ____ and tone of voice show our feelings. Bank: rely, expression, pay, reaction…

expression — “facial expression” is a fixed collocation and a noun is needed after the adjective.

EXERCISE TEXT

Collis P. Elseworth was a respectable businessman who suffered greatly from the useless purchases he made, which were disastrous for both his health and his pocket. 1. The patient agreed. Soon a poor art student whose name was Frank Swain was invited to give him art lessons. Frank was sure that the old man would never learn to draw. 2. The old man worked very hard and spent most of his time drawing something. Besides he seemed to take a great interest in the galleries and the painters who were exhibited there. 3. When spring came and the trees were in bloom, Mr. Elaseworth made a picture

which he called Trees Dressed in White. The picture was awful, but the old man announced that he was going to exhibit it in the summer show at the Lathrop Gallery. It was the biggest exhibition of the year, and a Lathrop. prize was the lifetime dream of every artist in the United States. 4. Fortunately, it was hung in a dark corner where visitors could hardly see it.

Two days before the close of the exhibition Mr. Elseworth was awarded the first prize of a thousand dollars for his painting. When Frank heard about this, he was astonished. “Congratulations, sir,” said he, seeing the old man. “5.” “Art's nothing,” said Mr. Elseworth. “I bought the Lathrop Gallery last month.”

1 It was evident that the doctor's advice did him good.2 Isn't art more satisfying than business?3 Finally, his doctor advised him to take up art as a treatment.4 However, he needed money and therefore was patient with his pupil.5 So, he was advised by his doctor to think twice before purchasing something really expensive.6 To everybody's surprise, the picture was accepted for the Show.7 However, the Gallery was so packed with pictures that no place was found for Mr. Elseworth's painting.
