How to solve: Words in contextA text with gaps and a word bank; each word is used once and one word is extra.

What it tests

Vocabulary in context: meaning, word class and collocation (which words go together).

In the exam: part VII, 1 tasks.

Step by step

  1. Read the whole text first without filling anything.
  2. Mark the word class of each bank word: noun, verb, adjective, adverb.
  3. For each gap decide which word class fits, then choose by meaning.
  4. Fill the gaps you are sure about first; the remaining choices get easier.
  5. One word is left over — check it really fits nowhere.

Watch out for

  • A word with the right meaning but the wrong form (rely vs reliable).
  • Collocations: pay attention, make a decision, facial expression.
  • Using the same word twice.

Example

Facial ____ and tone of voice show our feelings. Bank: rely, expression, pay, reaction…

expression — “facial expression” is a fixed collocation and a noun is needed after the adjective.

EXERCISE TEXT

Sarah: Sorry, you were very rude to Henry when you said he needs 1.
Ann: Well, it's true. Exercise would be good for him. He started jogging and then 2.
Sarah: Yes, but we can't all 3 taking physical exercise.
Ann: Anyone can do a bit of jogging. You don't have to be brilliant at it. And 4 must be bad for you.
Sarah: Well, you could have been 5.
Ann: Sorry, I'm not very good at saying the right thing. I'll try to be nice to him next time I see him.
Sarah: In any case my advice is to be always careful while speaking with people.
